As part of our goals to offer select students from around the world the opportunity to study at Michigan Tech and to support a globally aware academic community here in Houghton, Michigan, we are pleased to continue our Ambassador Scholarship Program for Undergraduate International Students.
The Ambassador Scholarships vary from $1,500/year up to $6,000/year. Awards will be based on the following criteria.
- Academic achievement
- Evidence of leadership
- English language competency
Students receiving awards must maintain a 2.5 grade point average at the end of each academic year and must participate in the Community Service Program at MTU in order to remain eligible for the continuation of the scholarship. Students must also be enrolled full time each semester for continuation of the award.

Guidelines and Eligibility Criteria
- The International Ambassador Scholarship (IAS) shall be variable $1,500 to
$6,000 per year ($750 to $3,000 per semester) based on the following
secondary or post-secondary (transfer) institution grade point average scale:
- 3.0 or equivalent = $1,500/yr.
- 3.25 or equivalent = $3,000/yr.
- 3.50 or equivalent = $4,500/yr.
- 3.75 or equivalent = $6,000/yr.
- Applicant must be admitted to pursue a major at the undergraduate level at
MTU as an F-1 or J-1 visa holder.
- Applicant must be a citizen or resident of any country except the United
States. He/she should not be the recipient of ALA, NSP, AEA, or AMPSA
Programs (U.S. federal or state financial aid programs), or Canadian Distinction Merit Award.
- Awards shall be made for one year (2 semesters) and eligibility will be
reviewed (renewal granted or not) at the end of Spring semester each year.
- Awards shall be made for a maximum of 8 semesters (some less).
- Applicants must register for a full course load (12 credits each semester at
Michigan Tech). If they register for less than a full course load, it must fall
under one of the exceptions enforced by the U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS) and approved by the Office of International
Programs and Services.
- If student fails to renew or is denied renewal, his/her IAS will be discontinued. See appeal procedure for reinstatement consideration.
