About the Area

Overlooking Portage Lake, our campus sits fifteen minutes walking distance from downtown Houghton and ten minutes driving distance from a shopping mall. (The city of Houghton operates an inexpensive bus service.) Connected by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, the cities of Houghton and Hancock have a combined population of 12,000 and are friendly, caring communities in which to live. MTU's safety record is the best among Michigan schools with enrollment of 5,000 or more and ranks in the top ten in the USA!

MTU's main campus contains thirty buildings plus a 352-unit apartment complex Daniell Heights which caters to students with families. Three full-service residence halls are available for Michigan Tech's students. McNair Residence Hall features the International House, a special place for students from the US and abroad to live and learn about each other's cultures.

The natural beauty of the Keweenaw (pronounced KEE-wah-nah) Peninsula and surrounding clear waters of Lake Superior offer abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Hiking, canoeing, rock-climbing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, downhill and cross-country skiing (on our own ski hill and trails), windsurfing, swimming, fly-fishing, camping and an 18-hole golf course—all can be enjoyed only minutes from campus.
